Emergency Dentistry in Dunedin, FL
Accidents happen. Few things can ruin a day like a popcorn kernel chipping a tooth or a sudden pain so intense you can’t even focus. For unplanned emergencies, we’re here to help with same-day appointments. Stay calm, give us a call, and see what we can do to provide immediate relief.
What To Do Before Emergency Dental Services
In several situations, emergency dental care is the difference between saving or losing your natural teeth. Receiving immediate attention from Bayshore Family Dental can turn around your situation to relieve pain and restore your teeth. Here are several cases that require urgent dental care and what to do until you reach the office:
- Chipped or fractured teeth: Save any pieces of the tooth if possible, and rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply gauze to the tooth to control bleeding if needed. A cold compress against your cheek will help control swelling and pain.
- Knocked out tooth: Be careful to handle the tooth by the crown and avoid touching the roots. Rinse the tooth off if it’s dirty, and try to reinsert the tooth into its socket. If you’re unable to insert it, place it into a glass of milk until your visit.
- Lost fillings: Gently rinse your mouth with warm water and protect the area from bacteria with either over-the-counter dental wax or a piece of sugar-free gum.
- Lost crowns: If possible, save the crown and gently press it back onto the tooth, or store it in a safe place to bring with you to the office. Over-the-counter medication or a dab of clove oil will also soothe the remaining tooth in the meantime.
- Loose tooth: Be careful not to eat and drink anything that might dislodge the tooth. You may apply over-the-counter dental cement to hold the tooth sturdy in the meantime.
- Injury to the gums, teeth, or jaw: If you have lingering or sharp pain after a blow to the teeth or jaw, apply a cold compress and clench gauze between your teeth to control any bleeding. On the rare occasion we’re unable to see you, a trip to the emergency room may be recommended.
- Painful toothache: For lingering or sharp discomfort, apply a cold compress and take over-the-counter medications to relieve soreness and pain.

Infected Tooth Extractions
The throbbing pain of an infected tooth is unbearable. An ache may start near your tooth then quickly spread to your ear and jaw. Preserving your natural teeth is always our goal, but some infected teeth might need extraction. This allows us to fully treat the infection before it can spread further and cause more severe problems.
A tooth extraction can be an intimidating procedure to face. That’s why we do everything we can to ease worries and provide comfort. We’ll walk with you through the procedure step by step, and provide sedation dentistry options for treatment that’s as painless and comfortable as possible. Immediate treatment of infection is vital for your overall health. Our team is here to lend a caring hand to get you back on the right track.
