Hopkins Aesthetic & Reconstructive Dentistry is now Bayshore Family Dental.

Tooth Extractions

It’s always our aim to maintain your natural teeth. However, in some cases our restorative dentistry toolkit – crowns, dental bonding, veneers – might not be enough. Pulling a tooth might sound scary, but Bayshore Family Dental is committed to providing the most comfortable and stress-free experience for your procedure. We offer a combination of proven sedation dentistry methods and local anesthesia to take the fear and discomfort out of this common procedure.

Do I Need a tooth extraction?

During your visit, your dentist will give you a thorough examination to determine if an extraction is the right step for you. You’ll receive digital x-rays, a review of your medical and oral records, and a detailed explanation of your available options.

Although maintaining your natural teeth is our goal, in these cases a tooth extraction may be suggested:

  • Crowded or impacted teeth
  • Advanced gum disease
  • Excessive cavities and tooth decay
  • Damaged, fractured, or excessively loose teeth

What To Expect

Before a tooth extraction, you’ll sit down with the dentist for a detailed explanation of the process and sedation options. We encourage you to bring in any questions you have to relieve any fear or doubts. We’re here to take care of you and make sure you have the information you need.

Oral conscious sedation may be provided and the area around the tooth will be numbed for comfort. Once we’ve confirmed the sedation has taken effect, the tooth is gently loosened, lifted, and removed from the socket.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare

Proper aftercare is essential for safe healing and preventing infection. For the next 24 hours after the surgery, you may experience light bleeding or swelling. Biting down on gauze provided by your dentist and using a cold compress will help diminish excess bleeding and swelling. Medication will be provided to manage pain. Use the recommended dosage and plan on taking it easy for the 24 hours following the procedure.

We recommend eating soft foods like yogurt, soups, and smoothies to keep the area clean and comfortable. Avoid using a straw, smoking, or spitting as the pressure may cause bleeding. Drink plenty of liquids, rest with your head slightly elevated, and get in contact with us if you experience excess bleeding, swelling, or pain.
